David Okike learnt to play chess in primary school aged 8 and soon developed a love for the game. He later became a London Junior Champion before moving to Nigeria with his family. While studying engineering he became the National champion of Nigeria, but due to work commitments had to practically abandon competitive chess playing.
He was introduced to chess coaching by a friend in 2009 and helped out in some junior chess clubs on a part-time basis. He discovered how rewarding it was to teach youngsters the rudiments of the game and to see how they enjoyed the competition and logic of the game.
He began coaching at primary schools in 2011 and joined the Barnet Knights coaching staff in 2013. He currently coaches in over 8 schools throughout London and several junior Chess clubs.
David also coaches several people of all ages on a one-to-one basis He plays for the famous Kings Head Chess Club in both the 4NCL and London League.
